Infrared Pyrometer – Temperature Sensing System
Infrared Pyrometers
Infrared pyrometers are widely used in industrial applications for measuring temperature without direct contact with the object. These devices detect the infrared radiation emitted by an object and convert it into an electrical signal to determine its temperature.
What is an Infrared Pyrometer
- An infrared pyrometer is a non-contact temperature measuring instrument.
- It measures temperature by detecting infrared radiation emitted from the surface of an object.
- Every object above absolute zero temperature emits infrared energy.
- The intensity of this radiation increases as the temperature of the object increases.
Working Principle
-
Infrared Radiation Emission
All objects emit infrared radiation depending on their temperature. -
Optical System
The pyrometer uses a lens system to collect infrared radiation from the target object. -
Infrared Detector
The collected radiation is focused onto an infrared detector (thermopile or photodiode). -
Signal Conversion
The detector converts the infrared energy into an electrical signal. -
Signal Processing
Electronic circuits process and linearize the signal. -
Temperature Output
The temperature is displayed or transmitted as an output signal such as 4–20 mA or digital communication.
Advantages of Infrared Pyrometer
- Non-contact temperature measurement
- Suitable for high temperature applications
- Fast response time
- Safe measurement of moving or inaccessible objects
- No contamination or wear on sensor
- Accurate temperature monitoring
